Today: Being Content in Everything

One of the many blessings God has given me in life are good, godly friends whom I grow with as we do life together. One of those friends has always had a very notable peace and contentment and when asked how she was able to always have such peace, no matter what her circumstances, she has always pointed upward to God. God supplies our every need to include the state of contentment no matter what circumstances surround us. Paul teaches us in today's reading that being content in every situation is something we learn. The secret is to know that we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength.

Material things, to include food and water, do not necessarily provide us with permanent contentment. They may satisfy us for a brief period, but they do not give us lasting contentment. Throughout Jesus’s ministry he alluded to living water and the bread of life as the source of our contentment. We may be temporarily appeased with material things and sustenance, but these will not sustain us.  Jesus, however will sustain us!

All that being said, we should still be grateful, as Paul was, and thankful for the way God does meet our physical needs. In this passage, Paul acknowledges the Philippians with gratitude for the times they have provided him by sending him aid. He makes it clear that he appreciates their gifts and is thanking them so that their kindness and generosity extended to him will be credited to them. Paul concludes this passage reminding us that our offerings to God, and to each other for God’s glory, are pleasing to God and are given and have received with the assurance that God will meet the needs of those who give the glory back to God.

My content and peace-filled friend, like Paul, with both words and actions shares her secret to contentment which is similar to that of Paul. She said her contentment came from waking up every day, and as her feet hit the ground she is reminded that she has the love of Jesus in her life and that she needs nothing more than that to sustain her throughout each day. Do we let others see that we are content in knowing that God will supply our every need? God desires for us to trust him to supply our every need and in return to show our love for him to others so they may also find true contentment.

Dear God, thank you so much for meeting our every need and making contentment possible every minute of the day if we but trust in you. Help us to wake up every day and before our feet hit the ground acknowledge you, O God, are all we really need. For you are Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.
