Today: The Results of Faithfulness

The other day I was walking with someone very close to me. The person is going through some difficulties right now and we began to talk about our faith and how we respond in times of crises. How do we feel about our faith in God when we face a crisis in our lives? What are the results of faithfulness during these times?

In the letter to the church in Smyrna mentioned in the book of Revelation, we see the reward for faithfulness according to Jesus, who died and rose again. First of all, faithfulness brings richness… not wealth but a life that is rich even amidst suffering. Rich, in this case, means abundant life amidst suffering. Abundant life is not just eternal life (although that is a great result of a faithful life), but is a life right now, on this earth, in the midst of a pandemic and lots of dysfunction, that is abundant in the fruits of the Spirit which are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). A more abundant life itself is the victor’s crown for the one who is faithful as well as a life eternal with Jesus.

As I sit here, typing this morning, I feel healthy and well. It is easy for me to say that I am full of faith and have hope in the Lord. But the real test comes when we face a serious crisis in life and are faced with challenges every day and perhaps every hour. Perhaps these challenges include distress over the state of our nation, sickness, the death of a loved one, or financial distress. During times such as these, can we still say that we are faithful and experience an abundant life? Are we measuring the results of faithfulness as a life that does not include suffering but in which everything is perfect when it comes to our health and well-being, and the well being of our loved ones, and to some extent our financial prosperity. The truth is that true faithfulness leads to an abundant life at all times, even after death, but also as we live on this earth.  We can, right now, have the assurance of a life that is rich and abundant in the intangible fruits of the Spirit. May we all think on the true rewards of a faithful life even when it is difficult and then experience God’s Spirit as he bestows on us a life that is rich and full no matter what circumstances we face.

Dear God, we give you thanks for the promises that come with our faithfulness to You… a life that is abundant in Christ, on earth as well as in life eternal. Help us to be faithful no matter how difficult things are right now and to place our trust in you, remembering that it is by Your grace we are saved through faith in your Son, Jesus Christ. And may we be ever inspired, motivated, and convicted by your Holy Spirit to live a faithful life. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
