Good News

In 1983, Anne Murray released a song entitled A Little Good News. The song addresses the problem of only hearing and seeing negative headlines in the news  at a time when it would be helpful to hear just a little bit of good news each day. In the song, she names some of the events of that day that were bad news: fighting in Lebanon, a bad economy, squawking about bad policy, firing shots in anger, taking people hostage, stealing a plane, and the list goes on and on of nothing but bad news. This is so true for us today, 37 years later. For the most part, the news is not going to lift your spirits during these difficult times. Sometimes it seems that bad news is even created. Why is it that we tend to be drawn to all of the bad things that are going on around us? Why is it so difficult for us to share the good news of Jesus Christ?

As Christians we are called to share about the goodness of God… which is the gospel of Jesus Christ. The word “gospel” literally means good news. In today’s reading, Paul says he is obligated to share the gospel to all people, Greeks and barbarians, wise and foolish (v. 14) and is eager to preach it to the Romans. To fulfill this obligation to share the gospel and to be like Paul, we must not be ashamed of the gospel story and we must believe in its power to save sinners and give victory to saints. When we share the gospel story of Jesus Christ, God’s righteousness is revealed; this means that without hesitation we acknowledge that the standard of righteousness comes from God alone. When we say we are right with God, it means that we practice what we preach. The final lesson we learn from Paul about not being ashamed of the gospel is that we live by faith as people who are called to be righteous. We cannot save ourselves, but God equips each believer to live by faith. It is our faith in God that makes us become justified… just as if we never sinned and it is living with faith in God that moves us on to completion (perfection and sanctification) in Christ. This is Good News…there is a sense of completion and continuous peace and joy that comes from embracing the gospel, not being ashamed of it, believing in its power to transform lives and then sharing the Good News with others so they may come to live a life of faith. Don’t you want to feel and experience and share Good News every day? Then let’s stop watching, focusing on and reading the news and the negative things in life and instead read about and share the gospel of the hope we have in Christ with others.

Dear God, we thank you for the gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ who can transform us and make us what you would have us to be. Help us to let you have your own way in our lives so that we might, unashamedly, share the best news ever… because of what God did for me, I am empowered to reveal the righteousness of God and live by faith so that others may come to know Jesus as well. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
