It’s What’s Inside that Counts

The older I get the more I am becoming acutely aware that my body is beginning to slow down; I simply cannot do what I used to do and my appearance has certainly changed over the years. I now have a head full of white hair and worn out knees. My stamina is not what it used to be and although I am healthy the reality is that this “jar of clay” is starting to become frailer and more fragile.

That being said, I am also more and more thankful of what is on the inside of this aging body of mine…for within me dwells the power of God. Paul reminds us today of all that is made possible because of God’s power dwelling within us. God is still able to use us to spread the Good News no matter how frail our bodies become. Despite our subjection to deterioration, both physically and spiritually, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is sufficient for God’s power to shine through us as God’s will is carried out and accomplished when we make our selves and our gifts available. In fact, in our weakness Christ’s resurrection power shines through us as we are spiritually strengthened, enlivened, and raised to new life. Yes, we will face problems and illness and deterioration but through these limitations we are reminded of the suffering of Christ for us; we are kept from becoming prideful; we are caused to look beyond this current life; and as a result we are able to prove our faith in the Lord. Our troubles are God’s opportunities to demonstrate his power!

This life is not all there is (thanks be to God)! Paul encourages us to fix our eyes not on what we see in this life but that which is unseen and eternal. If we keep our eyes fixed on Christ we will live through and above our pain knowing that one day there will be no more suffering. In the meantime, we can find comfort in knowing that God can still use these old “jars of clay” to allow his glory to shine so that others may see God’s powerful Spirit alive and well and working within us. It truly is what’s inside that counts… so won’t you let the Light and Spirit of God shine through you today!

Dear God, thank you for allowing us to be jars of clay which contain your power, strength and Spirit. Help us to be ever mindful of how you empower us and move us to share your Spirit with others and to reach more and more people and allow your glory to overflow on them. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
