Real Family

A little late on my devotion for today… sorry about that! But I am on vacation spending time with my family. I spent the day fishing with my husband and as I write this my daughter has just driven into our driveway to spend tomorrow with me. I love my family and am so excited to be off this week to spend time with them. But today’s Scripture gives me a broader picture of who my family is. That’s right… when we are Christians, we have a huge family and a different definition of family!

In today’s reading, Jesus is with a large group of people and his mother and brothers are outside waiting to speak with Him. Someone points out that his “family” is waiting to see him and he points towards his disciples and says “this is my family”. Jesus defines family as “whoever does the will of My Father in heaven”. This may be a difficult concept for us to comprehend but as Christians we are connected by the Holy Spirit to many brothers and sisters and need to recognize that we are part of a large extended family of believers! This is good news because we need this family to help us continuously grow in our faith.

We are born biologically into a family and it is a glorious and wonderful thing when that family is a Christian family. When we are born into a Christian family, God’s grace is already at work in our lives and provides us with an enlarged group of people to help raise us to experience and understand just how broad and great and wonderful that grace is. We are born into a body of believers who commit to teach us and help us grow in our relationship with Christ. As believers, we should be excited about the family of God we have been born into and want to invite everyone to this wonderful table of grace that Jesus refers to in Matthew 12. Jesus’ response may seem a little callous and indifferent towards his biological family but in reality he is teaching us that as Christians we are all connected to a large family of believers when we yield to the will of God.  Praise be to God that we are brothers and sisters in Christ!

Dear God, Thank you so much for giving us a wonderful extended family of believers to live our life together in you! Help us to acknowledge that we are better together as family when it comes to obeying and carrying out your perfect will for our life. Help us to embrace our life as disciples together and be grateful for the extended family of fellow believers. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
