Power from Living Hope

Over the past few weeks, we have seen what happens when a person or groups of people try to exert power and control in difficult times. We have seen chaos and havoc wreaked, particularly in large cities. Groups of protestors have emerged to express their displeasure with a long list of concerns that perhaps they have suppressed for years. At times, I have felt helpless and hopeless as I have watched the news. I find myself becoming anxious. But the readings for this week have brought me peace, hope, and a calm by reminding me that I worship an all-powerful God. If you look back over the titles of this week’s devotions we find and experience the power of God through the Good News of Jesus Christ when we reconcile with God and with one another, when we live in Christ, and when we are delivered through suffering.

Today, we will conclude the week by focusing on the power that comes from having a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. This living hope births us into an inheritance in heaven that will never perish, spoil or fade. Peter reminds us that the purpose of the suffering and trials of this life is to prove the genuineness of our faith as we are refined through these experiences and reveal our faith through praising, glorifying and honoring Jesus despite these trials. Even though we do not see Jesus, we love him, we believe in him and we are filled with an unexplainable joy that can only originate from our relationship with Jesus. Although we are promised an inheritance kept in heaven, right now – today –, we can experience and celebrate the ultimate gift of our faith… the salvation of our soul. The moment we receive the gift of God’s justifying grace through Jesus Christ the sanctifying (that is, saving work) of our soul begins. This salvation of our souls, moment by moment through the power of the Holy Spirit refining, perfecting and making us complete, is made possible through the living hope we have in a resurrected Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

When we focus on the pure and righteous power of God instead of the fight for power that we see people engaging in every time we watch the news these days, we can have a life-giving hope that moves us through and to the other side of our suffering, refining us and all the while giving us the steadfast gift of salvation of our soul, now in this life. We can experience and reap the results of our faith right now in this life. We do not need to wait until we get to heaven to rejoice and glorify God because of the living hope we have right now. Today, let’s praise God who through Jesus Christ, has given us salvation as we have died to our sins and were raised into a new life of revitalizing hope.

Dear God, thank you for the Living Hope we find in your son, Jesus Christ! Help us to embrace this hope and to praise and glorify you despite the strife, suffering and trials of this life so that others may have this same Living Hope too! In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
