God Provides Reconciliation

I love stories that bear witness to reconciliation… stories of two or more parties who have parted ways, stopped speaking to each other, and after years of hurt and separation are brought together again. I have been blessed to hear about and witness many heart-warming reconciliation stories as well experienced it in my own life.

Reconciliation is a powerful word used frequently these days in the life of the church. It comes from the Greek word κατηλλάγημεν (pronounced in English as katallassó) which means to properly, decisively change; to come to the same mind; and to exchange from enemies to friendship. In 2 Corinthians 5:18, it says “Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation”. This short statement reminds us that we have been redeemed and reconciled because of what Jesus did for us when he took on the penalty for our sins and that we have been given the gift of reconciliation to go share the message of how our lives have been changed to as many people as possible. Through reconciliation, God no longer counts our sins against us. This was made possible because Jesus, who knew no sin, became (took on) our sin, so that we might become righteousness through Him and be able to enter into a relationship and be reconciled with God; and then, experience God’s presence in our lives, daily and moment by moment.

Do you understand what a great gift reconciliation is? We can approach God directly because the gap of sin that separated us from God has been bridged by Jesus. Do you understand what our response to that gift should be? He became sin who knew no sin, that we might become His righteousness. If we allow the Holy Spirit to move us towards a life of righteousness through conviction, motivation and inspiration, and in so doing, we show others what it looks like to be reconciled, then we are sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. Are you and I living lives that bear witness to the gift of reconciliation we have received from God? In the midst of all the “ugliness”, schisms and “isms” in our world right now, are we shining the light of hope, peace, love and joy as ones who have received God’s gift of reconciliation? Let us pray that we embrace and share this great gift of reconciliation to ALL people.

Dear God, thank you for your great gifts of reconciliation and redemption that have saved us from the guilt and shame of our sins. Help us to go into a world that needs hope, peace, joy, and love and be agents of reconciliation. May we yield to your Holy Spirit who guides us into places and spaces that need to receive the gift of reconciliation and in so doing may others enter into a relationship with you. We pray this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ who preached and taught the gospel of reconciliation. Amen.
