Reading: Deuteronomy 7:6-14

The older I get, the harder it becomes for me to prioritize. Why is that? Well, some might say that it is due to a diminished ability to stay focused that comes from age. I choose to believe that it is due to a life full of many opportunities and trying to engage in as many of them as possible. In my attempt to participate in these opportunities, I find myself multi-tasking which often tends to lead to juggling multiple incomplete tasks. When this happens, I find that “to do” lists are extremely helpful in prioritizing which of these projects needs to be done first. Prioritizing helps me stay focused on what is most important.

Today’s reading from Deuteronomy 7:6-14, gives us some amazingly simple priorities when it comes to living life as people who have been chosen by God. We must first know that the Lord our God is God and is faithful and loving to ALL who love God. If we do love God, then we are going to be aware of and pay attention to God’s commandments which means that we need to study God’s Word. If we are immersing ourselves in God’s Word then not only will we pay attention to what God is telling us to do (or not do), but we are also going to follow God’s desires for our lives. Simply put, there are three things we need to do each day: know God is faithful and loves us, study God’s Word, and follow what God tells us to do. If we begin and end each day with these priorities, all other priorities should fall into place as well.

God has chosen us so that we might be the light of the world to others. The God who loves us desires for us to be equipped and empowered to go forth and share the good news of Jesus Christ with others. God will make us fruitful and increase our numbers and bless us spiritually when we start our day with these priorities.

Dear God, thank you so much for giving us priorities to keep us focused on you and living for you. Help us to stay focused on the fact that you love us and are faithful to us, that you gave us your Word to lead and guide us to live a godly life, and to read your word and live a life each day that reflects your perfect will for our lives. We ask this in the name of the One who illustrated these priorities for us when he lived and walked among us on this earth, your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
