Hope in a New Heaven and New Earth

We recently renovated our home…a home that was built in 1957. While we made great improvements to most all rooms in our house, it is still and older home with a few imperfections but we love our newly renovated home and will continue to make other improvements to it as time goes on. But no matter what we do to it, over time as is true of all earthly things, it will not last forever. Today’s passage, however, reminds us of a hope that we have in a promised new heaven and new earth, an eternal home. The old earth will pass away and there will be no more sea (which I admit saddens me for a moment) but we won’t miss it.

There are so many wonderful things that we have to look forward to in the new heaven and earth, chiefly that God will dwell with God’s people. Now God currently does dwell within us by the power of the Holy Spirit but in this new heaven God will live among us. There will be no more crying because there will be no more reasons to cry… no suffering, pain, and sin. All will be made new!!

Some reading this may say, “How do you know this is true”? It was such an important message that God told John to write it down because it is “true and trustworthy”. The Bible is full of prophesy and of recorded fulfillment of prophesy; therefore, God told John to write down this prophetic message and to emphasize that God said it was “true and trustworthy”. God has kept God’s Word and will continue to do so.

In fact, God says “It is done; I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end”. Therefore, consider this as “done”. “One day,” God says, through John, “you will be able to have water that runs freely at no cost and you will have an inheritance that is richer than any earthly inheritance”. The ones who believe have hope (assurance) that they will inherit the new heaven and earth. For those who do not believe and live a life of sin, they will be locked out from this inheritance.

Today choose to focus on the hope we have that one day there will be a new heaven and earth where God will dwell with us and there will be no need for renovations. This great news is true and trustworthy because God said it, told John to record it and it is therefore done. This is more than just a wishful hope; it is an assured hope because God is faithful, true, and trustworthy and has a record of keeping God's Word. May we be inspired by the Holy Spirit to share this Good News with others.

Dear God, we thank you for your tried, true and trustworthy Word that tells us that we will inherit a new heaven and new earth where there will be no more tears because there will be no more reasons to cry! Help us to hope in you and to look forward to this day but in the meantime to live with hope and to share this assurance with others! In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
