Daily Devotion -July 22, 2020
Reading: Hebrews 10:19-25
Therefore, Let US…”

Today happens to be the birthday of a great friend of mine. We have been good friends for at least 15 years and have been through lots of good times and some not so good times together. She is one of a group of several great friends who have encouraged one another and spurred one another on as it is described in today’s Scripture reading. The reason that this group of friends was even formed is due to the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit brought us together and is in the midst of our friendships with one another. Therefore, we continuously are challenged to draw near, to hold tight and to keep spurring one another on toward love and doing good things. We pray for one another, hold each other accountable and continue to be present in each other’s lives. And we do this because of the work of the Holy Spirit.

As I have mentioned in other devotions that the word “therefore” means we need to look at the preceding sentence to fully understand what follows.  The preceding passage in Hebrews 10:16-18 says the Holy Spirit will put the law in our hearts and write it on our minds to guide us in Christian living. The Holy Spirit will not remember our sins or our lawless acts although we will be guided and led by the Holy Spirit to not sin. Through the Holy Spirit we are guilt free and therefore can hold tightly to hope. This hope is not a wish or a desire but a strong assurance in a very faithful God. Through the Holy Spirit we are able to draw near to God together, hold tight to full assurance in God together, and consider spurring one another on towards love by meeting together and encouraging one another together and to do this more and more as we see the Day approaching (which means the day we die or the day the Lord returns, whichever comes first).

Through the power of the Holy Spirit we are placed into each other’s lives so that we can together draw nearer to God. The Holy Spirit knows exactly when we need to hear from one of our brothers and sisters in Christ to remind us of God’s faithfulness and love and offer us a word of encouragement to keep moving forward and staying in touch even more as we see the Day approaching. Therefore, let us not forsake getting together with one another.  Stay connected!

Dear God, thank you for those special people you place in our lives with whom by the power of your Holy Spirit, we can draw near to you, hold tight to the hope we have in your faithfulness and encourage one another. Helps us to not forsake staying in touch with one another, especially during these times when we especially need hope, encouragement, and love. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
