Daily Devotion, July 1, 2020 -In Christ

Devotion: July 1, 2020
Reading: Ephesians 1:1-14
In Christ

Often in my reading, writing and speaking, I use the expression “in Christ”. This morning as I read Ephesians 1:1-14, today’s prescribed reading for the day from A Guide to Prayer (Reuben P. Job, Norman Shawchuck, Upper Room Books, 1983), I was struck by the number of times that the expression “in Christ” or “in him” (referring to Christ) appears. It appears at least 11 times. I have read this Scripture numerous times but this morning I was moved to truly reflect on what it really means to live in Christ. The apostle Paul again gives us the answers. The meaning of "in Christ" can be categorized into three words… in Christ, I have (1) redemption, (2) inheritance, and (3) the Holy Spirit.

If we examine each of these words we will see that in Christ we are redeemed through Christ’s blood, forgiven of our sins, and blessed by God’s grace. The purpose for which we have been redeemed is to “at the right time” bring together that which is in heaven and on earth. We have also inherited access to the kingdom and to the ability to better understand God’s will for the kingdom, now and in the future. This inheritance means that because we are blessed with spiritually abundant lives we are moved to worshipping and giving praise to God no matter what is going on around us. To help us and guide us as we live our lives “in Christ”, we have also been sealed by the Holy Spirit. In Christ, we are protected by and belong to Christ and through the Holy Spirit the down payment is made on the eternal commitment God has made to us who receive and accept his grace made available to us “in Christ”.

Because we are redeemed, heirs to the throne and sealed by the Holy Spirit, we are also able to experience what it feels like to be blessed, chosen, holy and blameless, adopted, accepted, and forgiven. Wow! What a sense of security we should receive in the two words “in Christ” as they are unpacked by Paul in the greeting of his letter to the Ephesians. Are you and I embracing what it means to live our lives “in Christ”, especially during these uncertain times? If not, reflect on this statement… “Because Christ is in me, I am able to live in Christ and am sustained moment by moment and minute by minute so that I can praise and worship him” … and then pray God will lead you to a life that is reflective of one that is “in Christ”.

Dear God, you sent us your Son, Jesus Christ, to show us how to live like you would want us to live and to give his life so that we might be redeemed. For this, we are humbled and give you thanks. Help us to be always aware of what it means to live in Christ… to be redeemed, to be heirs to your throne and to be sealed by your Holy Spirit… and to praise you for all the blessings that come with this life in Christ. It is “in Christ’s” name that we pray. Amen.
