Persevering Produces Crops

The theme my devotions this week has been focused on patience… patience specifically in forgiveness, readiness and misery and also in being appropriately clothed in all the fruits of the Spirit but especially love and patience. Today we talk about another aspect of patience…perseverance. Persevere means to endure… to keep pushing on regardless of what obstacles we may face. Life sometimes throws us curve balls and we are ready to give up. We get discouraged and allow anxiety, depression and other emotions to keep us from pushing forward amidst life’s disappointments. Today’s reading, particularly verse 15, offers perseverance as a key ingredient for the fruitful Christian.

Verse 15 is very specific about what it takes to “produce a crop” as a Christian. Persevering is the action that results in the “good crop” but it is persevering in certain aspects of Christian living. As Christians, we are to persevere as people who are virtuous, have a good heart, hear God’s Word and retain it. When people persevere and endure in living out these four actions, they will be fruitful as Christians. Persevering means that on the worst of days, we pray, we worship, we serve and we study God’s Word and by enduring in carrying out these acts of piety and compassion, we will indeed be people who produce. Not because of what we do, but because of the One who convicts and moves us forward to action, even when life is tough. Are you willing to persevere in a virtuous life that results from reading retaining and living out God’s Word? Sometimes when life throws a curve ball, we may feel moments of despair and be ready to allow these moments to choke the life out of us. But praise be to God for the fruit of the Spirit and for patience and perseverance that move us forward in the Christian journey to be productive children of God!

Dear God, thank you for giving us patience and perseverance to continue to put one foot in front of the other even on days when we feel like giving up. Help us to always rely on your Spirit to fill us with good virtues as we hear your word, live your word and retain your word. Help us to be good seeds who are fruitful in building your kingdom right now, on earth as it is in heaven! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
