Appropriately Clothed

When I was 10 years old, the church I attended started a new school and approached my mom, a teacher, about coming on board to help get the school started. She, my brother, sister and I left the public-school system and for three years, I attended the school affiliated with my church. This was during the era of mini-skirts and to ensure modesty was maintained there was a dress code. Dresses were supposed to be no more than 3 inches above the knees and were to be modest in appearance. The guys, likewise, had standards, particularly when it came to hair length. Each day we were to maintain a modest in appearance. However, the most important clothing I was taught was the clothing of God’s people found in Colossians 3:12-17.

As Christians, our inward clothing is more important than our outward clothing and right in the middle of the description of this clothing in verses 12-13 is a description of our theme word for this week patience. Every moment of every day we are to put on patience, and we do this by bearing with each other and forgiving one another as the Lord has forgiven us. What does it mean to “bear with one another”? It means to endure in relationships and to “put up with” one another even when we disagree. Some other articles of Christian clothing necessary for patience and to be able to bear with one another include gentleness, humility and above all, the article of clothing that binds all together in perfect unity, love. When each one of us is properly clothed for Christ and in Christ, we are one body called to peace, learning and growing in wisdom together as we admonish one another. Now that word “admonish” has a strong connotation of scolding and chiding but the intent is to hold one another accountable always within the context of relationships that are bound by Christian love.

Even more important than the modesty of our outward appearance is our spiritual sincerity and “bearing” on the inside. How we appear on the outside will come in due time, but we first need to be properly clothed on the inside, by and through the grace of God. The key article of our spiritual clothing is love, but patience follows as we bear with one another and endure one another, growing together in the grace of love of God. During these days of tension and divisiveness, even within the church, let us remember to bear with one another as we become stronger in our relationship with Jesus and engage in healthy conversations that bring honor and glory to God.

Dear God, thank you for giving us the spiritual clothing of compassion, humility, gentleness, patience and most of all love. Help us to put this clothing on every moment of every day as we interact with each other within the church and as we engage with the world in our day to day lives so that others may see Your glory through us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
