Acts 10:34-43
No Favorites with God
Sometimes as parents, grandparents, teachers, leaders, and other roles in life it is hard to not have favorites. Sometimes we just seem to connect better with some people than with others. When others become aware of this closer connection, they call it favoritism. Favoritism can go beyond affecting relationships to affecting many other things in life. For example, a supervisor could potentially be accused of showing favoritism for selecting one person over another for a job opening. In today’s passage it is very clear that God does not show favoritism but accepts all people from all nations who meet two criteria: those who fear God and those who do what is right.  The color of our skin, our gender and where we are from is not a determining factor when it comes to God’s acceptance. God just wants us to fear him and to do good.  God sent Jesus to exemplify a life full of respect and love for God the Father and a life of going around doing good.

In Acts 10, verses 37-43, we are told exactly what Jesus did to show his fear (awe and respect) of God and to show us how to do good – he healed all who were under the power of the devil. This means that we don’t just do good to those who are likable and easy to love; we do good to those who are under the power of the devil. Jesus also showed his love and fear for God by sacrificing his life on the cross and placing his faith in God to raise him again from the dead. Peter was one of the ones who witnessed Jesus fearing God, doing good and sacrificing for the sake of others.  In the book of Acts after Jesus has ascended, Peter tells others and testifies that God has appointed Jesus as the judge of the living and the dead. God wants us to testify about what we believe so that everyone can hear this good news about God and receive forgiveness of Sin through the name of Jesus.

God does not have favorites and the message is pretty clear in today’s reading that God does not want us to have favorites either. God wants us to love and respect him and to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others without partiality but even with those who are living under the power of the devil. God will take care of the saving, delivering and judging. We simply need to revere God with great awe (that is, fear) and to do good by sharing Jesus with all others through our actions, words and deeds. There is no favoritism according to God…simply two criteria he expects: fearing God and doing right. God wants us to be like Christ and show that kind of witness to all people God places in our lives.

Dear God, Thank you for not showing favoritism. And for sending Jesus to show us how to live a more perfect life by showing us what it looks like to care for others no matter what nation they are from and what color their skin. Help us to follow Jesus and his disciples who did not no show favoritism being in awe of your greatness and witnessing to others through our words, actions and deeds. In Jesus’ name. Amen
