A Guide Out of Sin

Bad news…good news. Bad news first… no matter how hard we try, we cannot resist sin without God. Good news… God sent us Jesus so that if we sin, we are forgiven, and this forgiveness is for all those who acknowledge sin. The way that we know we have come to know Christ, is clear… if we know and love Christ, we keep his commands. And if we keep his commands, we do not sin.

Today’s passage offers us a guide out of sin. First, if we claim to live in Christ, then we live as Jesus did; that is, we live in the light and not in darkness. If we live in light, we love our brothers and sisters and are not blinded by hate. It is a progression that begins with knowing we are forgiven, knowing Jesus, having strength through the power of the Holy Spirit to live as Jesus lived and therefore being able to overcome the evil one. When we live this way, we do not love the world and the things of the world; we love the Father and desire that which is eternal. And we love people and want others to know Jesus, too.

There are also three lusts that we need to resist: lust of the flesh; lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. In resisting these three lusts, we affirm our faith in Jesus Christ. These things are not from the Father but are of the world and will pass away. They have no lasting value and are not eternal.

Now if you are like me, you look at this and may be saying, “I cannot do this! There is no way I can resist sin.” In the absence of God, you are correct; we cannot resist sin. But the good news is that God sent us Jesus to die for our sins, so that we might be forgiven. When we acknowledge the sin we are born into and our need for Christ to be Lord of our life and the only One who can rescue us from this sin, the Spirit of God will motivate, convict and inspire us to live a life like Christ. The key is to know Christ through prayer and by studying the Scripture, worshipping, staying in fellowship with other believers, and loving and serving others. When we relinquish control of our lives to Christ, then the Holy Spirit will guide us out of sin. With Christ, and the Holy Spirit to guide us, we can resist sin and the darkness of this world.

Dear God, thank you for your amazing love that you sent to us through Jesus Christ our Lord and for the Holy Spirit who is our guide out of sin. Help us to embrace the Holy Spirit as the Guide you have given us to resist sin and live like Jesus. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
