Reading:
1 Samuel 18:1-5
Weekly Theme: A Friend of Souls
Today: Soul Friends

Episcopal priest, theologian, and academic, Urban T. Holmes writes that “spiritual [Godly] friends must have three qualities: detachment, discretion, and discernment, with all that prepares for those gifts. Spiritual companionship is a gentle art, demanding a willing to listen as if one had a third ear attuned to the inner self.” Given this definition of friendship, who are your spiritual friends? Who are the people in your life who can detach from you when you need space or from whom you can detach when you need objectivity? Who are your friends who can balance wisdom, judgment and will also honor your privacy?

Jonathan was such a friend to David, as we see in today’s passage. He loved David “as his own soul” and made a covenant of friendship with David.  As a symbol of their friendship, he gave David his robe, armor, his sword and his belt. David is strengthened by Jonathan when King Saul is jealous and angry with David. Because of Jonathan’s warning to David about Saul’s anger, David is able to hide and seek protection (1 Samuel 23:14-18). Jonathan and David had a close relationship because they had a strong bond, with a mutual affection for God and for one another and were willing to sacrifice selflessly for the sake of one another and for the sake of God’s will. In other words, their friendship was based on a deeply spiritual bond that was of God.

God places special friends in our lives to help us learn and grow as disciples and provide us with essential fellowship among believers. They do not judge us but do help us with accountability as followers of Christ. They remain curious with us as we seek to grow closer to Christ, to gain insight and wisdom while honoring our privacy. God intends for us to have godly friends. Who do you need to thank today for being a spiritual friend who you can trust to be objective, to have discretion, and to discern with you as you both journey with Christ?

God, thank you for giving us godly friends who helps us hold ourselves accountable in our relationship with you and your Son, Jesus. Help us to be grateful for these spiritual friends with whom you have blessed us and to look around to see others who need spiritual friends so that we all may be drawn ever closer to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
