Pastor: Connie Belmore

Daily Devotion – October 27, 2020
Reading: Ephesians 5:1-20
Weekly Theme: God Can Change Lives
Today: Follow God’s Example

God has blessed me with many fine examples of Christian living for as long as I remember. These examples were found in my parents, grandparents, other relatives, and the wonderful Sunday School teachers and leaders in the many churches I was raised in as a child and have attended as an adult. However, today’s reading from Ephesians 5:1-20 reminds us that the Godliest example we have ever been given was the Son of God, God in the flesh, Jesus Christ. Our lives can be changed when we allow God’s Holy Spirit to stir in us to live a life that reflects that of the life Jesus illustrated for us during his time on earth.

What kind of life is this? It is a life in which we walk in the way of love…love for God and love for neighbor (remembering that our neighbor is anyone who is next to us at any given moment). The life of Jesus did not just exemplify human love but showed us what it means to love sacrificially. When we live this kind of life, we are inspired by God’s Spirit to give up those things that please our flesh (sexually immoral behaviors, obscenity, crudeness) and engage in acts of thanksgiving. We live out the kingdom of God on earth which means that with help from the Holy Spirit we do not engage in activities that are immoral, impure, greedy, or self-serving. These behaviors are idolatrous- that is, these behaviors can become the center of our focus rather than those behaviors which lead us to reflect on God and thus, allow God to change us.

In this passage, Paul was speaking to believers…church people. He was telling them how to live in the light and reflect goodness, righteousness and truth that only comes from God. Jesus exemplified this behavior for us in his time on earth. As believers, we should take every opportunity to live carefully and seek wisdom, trying to understand God’s will in our life. We should keep our minds cleared (sober) and free from thoughts that lead to destruction. When we bear witness to the changes that occur in our own lives by focusing on the goodness of God through prayer, reading God’s Word, fellowshipping with other believers and praising God together, this proves God has changed us and we begin to exemplify God’s example he gave us in Jesus Christ. Want you join me this week by engaging in those things, by the power of the Holy Spirit, which help us follow God’s best example, Jesus Christ? God can change our lives if we will only open our hearts and minds to the leading of the Holy Spirit to help us follow God’s very own example, Jesus Christ.

Dear God, thank you for the best example of YOU… Jesus Christ. Your servant, Paul, challenged the Ephesians and us today to follow your example. Please inspire, motivate, and convict all of us who call ourselves Christians, followers of Christ, and believers to follow this great example you gave us in Christ. Help us to realize that when we accepted your gift of grace, your Holy Spirit became present within us. May we open our entire being to the stirring of your Spirit within us that we might exemplify Christ and in so doing be Your agent through which others are led into relationship with your Son, Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
