Pastor: Connie Belmore

Daily Devotion – October 26, 2020
Reading: Ezekiel 36:22-32
Weekly Theme: God Can Change Lives
Today: God Renews

Have you ever had a day, week, or even year for which you wished to have a “re-do”? Most of us probably have experienced those days where we just do not like ourselves and really do not like others. Perhaps on these days we do things that we know are wrong because we are apathetic. And when we are apathetic, we let our guard down and may do things that are just not good…not of God. Even on these days when we are not very Christ-like, we can have hope that God renews us. Yes, thank goodness, God renews us, because we are God’s people…and God does this even when we do not deserve it.

Today’s reading is preceded by 21 verses explaining how God’s own people have profaned God’s holy name. They have had a long stretch of rebellious behavior. Yet, today’s passage, in the ten verses that follow, describes why and how God responds with restoration. God responds for the sake of God’s holy name. When God’s people do not “do justice, show mercy and walk humbly," we defame the name of God. God is going to bring restoration to his people despite their waywardness so that God’s name might be restored. God will do this by gathering his people back from the nations to which they have been scattered and place them back to the land they own. God will clean and purify them; and give them a new heart and a new spirit…God’s Spirit. God’s people will be led by God’s Holy Spirit to follow and keep the decrees and laws of God. This restoration is to fulfill the prophesies that God’s people will live in the land they were promised and be rescued from the filth that has infiltrated their lives. They will be blessed spiritually (by receiving God’s Spirit) as well as physically (with grain and fruit and crops) and will no longer be a disgrace because of the physical and spiritual famine they have experienced. Their restoration will lead them to repentance; they will remember their evil and wicked ways from their past and will despise their previous actions. God is restoring them because they are God’s people and God wants his name to be glorified and not defamed by his people.

God is able to melt our hearts and change our lives even when we do not begin with repentance. God’s grace and mercy are always before us and through the power of God’s Holy Spirit we are renewed, restored, and led to acknowledge our need for repentance. We are then able to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior who transforms us by the power of the Holy Spirit. The very goodness of God, despite our ornery and contrary ways, leads us to acknowledge that God alone can change our lives and renew us all to glorify God’s name.

Dear God, thank you for your grace and mercy, even amidst those times when we rebel. Help us to understand that our actions do matter and to recognize those days when we become apathetic, let our guard down and do things that we should not do. Lead us to understand that what we do is a reflection on your holy name and acknowledge that you have already provided the Way of renewal and restoration through Jesus Christ our Lord and by the power of your Holy Spirit, if we only accept our need for your gift of grace and mercy. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
