Daily Devotion - November 26, 2020 - Being Thankful

Pastor: Connie Belmore

Daily Devotion – November 26, 2020
Reading: Psalm 95:1-3
Topic: Being Thankful

Let’s face it... it has been a tough year. If each one of us stops to reflect on the year, we could focus on all that has not gone right...all the well-laid and made plans that have been changed for us by the pandemic. We could choose to have a really negative and bad attitude about all of the political fall-out, divisiveness, looting and fighting that have come about as a result of the pandemic or the very real effect it has had on our economy. And if that is where our minds have been, that is perfectly understandable. But today, this day that we set aside to reflect on the goodness and abundance of God, let’s try to focus on all that is good and right and all that the Lord has blessed us with amidst all the turmoil of this year.

Psalm 95:1-3 gives us some helpful hints at how to position ourselves to be thankful physically, mentally and spiritually. Let’s start with a song... a happy song, and one that give thanks to God. This passage tells us to make a joyful noise into the Lord and if you are like me you may be saying, “I don’t sing very well”! I do not like to sing publicly but I do love to sing and do love to sing praise to Jesus. I have found that when I am praising Jesus through song, my mind is taken away from all the turmoil in this world and my whole attitude is changed. The psalmist then suggests that we come into God’s presence with thanksgiving because the Lord is Great and a King who is above all gods and is above all the evil and sadness and pain that we may have experienced this past year.

So as you begin (or end) this Thanksgiving Day (or week), try the above prescription for being thankful... sing praise, decide to be joyful, pray and come into the presence of God. It has been a tough year but God has never left our side, has never abandoned us. God is here and present and has and will sustain us through the many trials of life. For when we are present with God amidst the suffering, we can always rejoice and sing because of his sustaining and steadfast love, hope, peace, and joy! Won’t you join me today in singing praise to God, our great Provider, who does do wonderful things in us and for us, even amidst suffering, and also join me in placing our hope and complete trust in God?

Dear God, thank you for your very presence with us throughout this most difficult year. Thank you for your deliverance through illness and as we still go through the pandemic that has plagued the world. Help us to take this time to stop and think of all the ways that you have blessed us and to know that you are ever present with us and to be joyful and praise you for what you have already done in our lives and the great plans you have in store for us today and every day. Help us to rejoice always, even when it is difficult and know that you will provide the love, peace, joy and hope that always gives us reason to sing praise. In your Son, Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
