Deuteronomy 30:15-20
Weekly Theme: Crucial Choices
Today: This or That?

One of the ice breakers I have used with youth and children, and have participated in myself as an adult, is a game called this or that. All participants stand in the center with the leader standing in the center but apart from the participants and saying something like this, “Would you prefer a dog or a cat as a pet?” or “Would you rather communicate by phone call or text?” or “Would you rather do a cardio or weights workout?”. You get the point. Sometimes it is hard to decide between the two choices because you either like or dislike them both about the same. The point of the game is to break the ice in a new group setting but also to help us realize that sometimes making decisions and choices is difficult.

The author of Deuteronomy, who is believed to be Moses by most Jewish and Christian scholars, is relaying to the people of Israel two choices: life and prosperity OR death and adversity. Moses further says that life and prosperity come to God’s people when they love the Lord, walk in God’s ways, and keep God’s statutes and ordinances. This may sound like a promotion for what people call today refer to as “prosperity” gospel. Unfortunately, prosperity is a term that has often been mistakenly associated only with material possessions and wealth, rather than a life that is full of the spiritual blessings that come to those who accept and receive God’s grace as they experience being in relationship with God. God alone is enough to satisfy our every need when we put our trust in eternal God and experience his love. Our reaction to God’s love occurs through divine revelation and when we respond with loving obedience rather than living a life driven by our autonomous reasoning and selfish desires.

Life is more than an object lesson in which we make a choice within a moment or two. True life occurs when we enter into a relationship with God and flourish spiritually. Our life choices do matter to God although we have been given the ability to choose. God wants us to know that we matter so much that he accepts and respects our choices, but firmly encourages us as he says, “Choose and receive my grace today.” Have you made a choice to walk a life that results in spiritual blessings even when all may be going awry in our physical world? If not, want you choose to receive God’s gift of grace today? If you need to talk with someone further, feel free to reach out by email or phone at eurekaumc@yahoo.com or 919-242-2229.

Dear God, we thank you for the freedom you gave us to make choices in life. Help us to make wise choices and to receive the grace that You have offered us through your Son, Jesus Christ, and to know that even though we may not prosper materially, we will always flourish spiritually. Then may we experience life realizing Your grace is enough. We pray this in Your name, God Almighty Lord Jesus Holy Spirit. Amen.
