Daily Devotion – March 5, 2021
Romans 8:18-25
Weekly Theme: Thirsting for God
Today: Flourishment

As you open your devotion time this morning, imagine that you have been a full day without any liquids… not one drop of water or any other liquid substance. Many of you may have fasted from food and liquids as you prepare for medical tests or procedures or after you have had major surgery, and know personally how it feels. Your mouth is dry and your tongue sticks to the roof of your mouth; you long just to have one drop of moisture in your mouth. This extreme thirst that we periodically may have experienced is a taste of what it means to suffer. God sent us Jesus so that we might experience relief from suffering... thirsting... now and eternally.

In Romans 8, the apostle Paul offer us the way to endure dry and parched times of suffering in our Christian journey. We must not focus on the suffering of this day but rather on the glory that we experience in Christ and that we will experience eternally when we stand in the very presence of God. One day, we will be set free from all forms of suffering and from the decay of this life and will experience eternally the freedom God had in store for us when he created the world. We may groan now and cry out for a drink of water to quench our parched souls, but we cling to the hope for that which is unseen, God’s glory, and wait for its full realization with patience. In the meantime, we still experience God and cling to that which is hidden yet know with assurance it exists and in this we find hope.

The next time you are feeling spiritually parched, look to God for hope and freedom from the bondage and restrictions in this life. Remember that Christ came to pay the penalty for our sins so that we can become his righteousness and have hope in our eternal future. This kind of flourishing hope is not “wishful thinking but is instead firm assurance in what will be even if we cannot yet see it. We can have this type of hope in an eternity is orderly, perfect, and beautiful and where suffering, discord and spiritual thirst will cease to exist. In the meantime, may you flourish as you drink the Living Water of Jesus Christ through praying, studying God’s Word, experiencing Christ through Christian relationships, and serving others.

Dear God, thank you for the flourishment we can receive now in our life on earth that comes to us through Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord. Help us to be diligent in prayer, reading Scripture, engaging in Christian relationships and discipleship, and serving others so that we might flourish as we find hope in what you have in store for us, now and eternally. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
