Daily Devotion - March 1, 2021 - Spiritual Thirst

Pastor: Connie Belmore

Daily Devotion – March 1, 2021
Psalm 63:1-8
Weekly Theme: Thirsting for God
Today: Spiritual Thirst

There are few things worse than a parched, dry mouth worsened by knowing that there is no water to be found. Imagine being stranded in a desert with no water in sight. As I type this devotion, I am thirsty, but I know that I can get up, go in the kitchen, and get a nice cup of clean, cold water to quench my thirst and refresh me.

Just as we can become physically thirsty, we also can experience spiritual thirst and dryness. There are times in our journey when we may have distanced ourselves from God and are thirsty to taste, see and experience God again or  for the first time. As the psalmist in today's passage implies, our whole being longs for God as if we are in a dry and parched land, looking for a drink of water.

God desires to quench our thirst with his power, glory, and love. God’s love is above all “loves” and moves us to praise and glorify him. God is the only One who can satisfy our spiritual thirst. Our Christian relatives and friends can help us in times of need, but God is the only One who can satisfy us eternally and help us when we are spiritually dried up, parched and thirsty for the Living Water that only God can provide.

How do we partake of this Living Water? Through God’s grace we are led to this fountain of water and are moved to seek it, and then to simply receive it, just as if someone is offering you a glass of water when you are physically thirsty. We long for it and God is instantly ready to extend an ample supply of eternal, Living Water to sustain us. All we need to do is open our hands and mouths to receive the love of God which then move us to glorify and praise him. We can look to other sources to satisfy our spiritual thirst, but God alone can quench our dry and parched souls. Want you open your entire body, mind, and soul to receive the Living Water God desires to give to you? And then in gratitude, give God praise and glory.

Dear God, thank you for giving us your Living Water to satisfy our thirsty souls. Help us to be acutely aware of our need to keep our souls replenished with the Living Water that only you can supply… and to drink from it and let it soothe and moisturize our parched souls so that we might give you glory and praise. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
