Weekly Theme: Crucial Choices
Today: Put Off – Put On

Throughout our lives, we are faced with choices. Some statistics show that the average person makes over 35,000 decisions per day (or 2,000 per hour, one decision every two seconds)… now that is a lot of decision making. No wonder we are tired. We are very accustomed to choosing to do or not do something. This week we have spent some time reflecting on what the Scripture says about crucial choices. What is it that you choose to do every day or as Paul describes it in our reading today, on what things do you “set your mind”?

If we have been raised in Christ, we are to set our minds (or seek first) those things which are above rather than things on the earth. Paul encourages the Colossians to put to death your “members” or the parts of your life that belong to earth… those things that are not eternal such as fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desires… you get the picture. These “acts or feelings” drive us to do some things that are a hindrance in our relationships with God and with other people and lead to some extreme, negative emotions such as anger, wrath, blasphemy, and filthy language. Rather than choosing to live in the flesh, as people who love God, we should instead be moved by the Spirit to live a new and renewed life characterized by compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. As believers who put on this new character, we should reflect a new nature which displays tolerance, forgiveness, love, unity, peace, and gratitude which equips us as disciples who make disciples.

It is indeed by God’s grace, expressed in the mighty acts of Jesus Christ, that we are saved through faith. Our actions do not save us… but they should reflect Christ “in us” and display a new life, one that is continuously renewed every day in our knowledge of God. What does it mean to live in Christ? It means that we conform to living in the image of God, made known to us through Jesus’s life on earth, that we recognize God’s love as one that is not bound by demographics such as ethnicity or race or gender, that we commit our lives to growing as disciples who teach and warn each other about God’s wisdom, worship and that we fellowship together in Christian love.

We make thousands of decisions every day. Do the decisions we make each day reflect the life of someone who is holy and beloved by God? Would others look at us and say that our actions match the name we claim when we say we are Christians? Join me in asking these questions and deciding, second by second, hour by hour, day by day to live a life that reflects that Christ dwells in me.

Dear God, thank you for challenging us through your apostle, Paul. Help us to think about you and your teachings all day long and to live a life that reflects a life in Christ rather than a life in the flesh. Convict us and change us by the power of your Holy Spirit. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
