Daily Devotion - January 6, 2021 - Like Father, Like Son

Pastor: Connie Belmore

Daily Devotion – January 6, 2021
Reading:
John 5:19-24
Weekly Theme: The Son of God
Today: Like Father, Like Son

In these days of “political correctness” and extreme divisiveness it can be difficult to find the right words to describe God without offending someone, thus making it difficult to describe the relationship between God as Father and Jesus as Son as described in today's Scripture. In the NIV translation no one can deny Jesus as the Son of God and God as the Father of Jesus, thus the title of today’s devotion. This passage clearly describes the relationship between God and his Son as one of “likeness”.  I truly do not intend to offend any one, but this devotion truly has much less to do with gender and much more to do with the divine nature of God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit - One .

One of my former pastor’s recently posted the opening of a prayer he recently heard in an online worship service which was the best illustration of the Oneness of God he said he had ever seen or heard. The pastor to whom he was listening to, began her prayer with “Almighty God Lord Jesus Holy Spirit”. My former pastor went on to note that she had used no pauses or “ands” between these 6 words that describe and personify who God is and the unified likeness and Oneness of God – Father Son Holy Spirit. You may have noticed that I used this in my closing prayer yesterday to acknowledge all God is when we pray to God.

In today’s reading from John 5:19-24 Jesus reflects upon the likeness and oneness between him and God. Jesus tells his disciples whatever he sees his Father doing, Jesus does, too. God intentionally shows his Son all he does and at the time of this writing by John, God will be showing even greater works than those already done by his Son. What are some of the works that are mentioned in these few verses? As God raises the dead and gives them life, Jesus does the same. As the Father has authority over judgment but now judges no one, Jesus has been entrusted by God to have all authority to judge with objectivity, grace, knowledge, and wisdom. As God deserves honor and glory, so does the Son of God. This relationship is borne of oneness and likeness because of the relational love between and within “Almighty God Lord Jesus Holy Spirit.”

Jesus concludes his talk with his disciples by telling them that whoever hears the words he has said about his oneness and likeness with God, and believes him and he who sent him, will have eternal life. As co-believers in Christ, we should likewise try to be godly people who live in unity and oneness with one another. If you do not have a relationship with God Almighty Lord Jesus Holy Spirit, please feel free to contact me through our church email (eurekaumc@yahoo.com) or at 919-242-2229 and I would be more than happy to tell you about the difference God Almighty Lord Jesus Holy Spirit has made in my life.

One True God, thank you for being the One we can go to in prayer. Thank you for creating, delivering, saving, redeeming and loving us as only you can, Almighty God Lord Jesus Holy Spirit who is One. Help us to become one with you and to become one with each other. In Your Name we pray. Amen.
