Weekly Theme: The Authority of God’s Word
Today: When God Speaks...

What or who do you think of when you hear the word authority? I think of my wonderful Dad who taught me how important it was to recognize and respect authority. Some may say that he went to far... I say not. Yes he some time resorted to spankings to get his point across but as I began to work and would at times disagree with their ideology or direction, I would always remember that even if I disagree, I respect the authority they have been given to supervise me. What is authority? According to Merriam-Webster it is the power to influence or command thought, opinion or behavior. We have seen our presidents invoke authority by signing executive orders. This type of authority that they automatically have. Authority is given to someone by someone else. In the case of the president, it is given to him by the people who have elected him.

Ultimate authority comes from God. The authority of God’s word is obvious as he spoke the world into existence as we are reminded in today’s reading. The Word of God actually refers to the very words God spoke and inspired others to write and record. Because God is the source of all authority, there is authority in the very words of God. God’s authority is not abusive or reckless or hurtful...God’s authority is good! God created the heavens, the earth, light, darkness, evening, morning, sea and sky on the first and second days. As God spoke each creation into existence --- the plants, trees, vegetation, birds, sea creatures, every living thing that moves, man and woman – at the end of each day he saw that “it was good”. God’s authority speaks good things into existence. Even though it may not seem “good” at the time, God’s universal view of all that is created knows that the ultimate result will be good.

God’s authority ultimately results in that which is full of mercy and justice. Even at times, when God allows events in our lives that do not seem good, God also provides the means to deliver us through these times and God’s ultimate will for God’s people is good. God’s authority is passed on to humans who are ordained as pastors, teachers and servants who then are instruments of God’s authority who equip and empower the church to go forth and proclaim all that God has done through Jesus and the Holy Spirit. God’s authority something that we both receive and then take forward so that God’s Word can be shared with others as we together engage in God’s kingdom building. When God speaks through God’s Word, through other people, situations, events, circumstances, traditions... it is good. Amen.

Dear God, thank you for being the ultimate authority in our lives and for placing good people in our lives to be conduits of Your authority by sharing your Word and ordering your church to carry out the mission of making disciples. Help us to receive your authority and carry on the building of Your kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
