Daily Devotion – January 15, 2021
Matthew 11:25-30
Weekly Theme: Come Follow Me
Today: Living Freely and Lightly

The cost of discipleship is huge. This week’s devotions have certainly reminded us of that. Loving God, loving neighbor (the person you are with no matter who that is) and loving yourself, in that order, is the key to discipleship. The mission of the church (a group of disciples) is to make more disciples. Simply put, the way that we do this is through loving others as we follow Jesus.

As followers of Jesus, we are called to open ourselves to the way Jesus is revealed to us each day through the Holy Spirit. In today’s reading, as Jesus prays, he clearly acknowledges that God hides things from those who are “sophisticates and know-it-alls” and reveals himself to the “ordinary” (The Message translation). Then Jesus talks to the people (not just his disciples) and invites them to come to him, to be restored and find rest…real rest. He invites the people he is addressing (and us today), to walk with him, to work with him and to watch how he finds and provides rest. I love the way Eugene’s Peterson describes Jesus’ next words in his biblical translation, The Message: “Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live “freely and lightly”.

As Jesus calls people to follow him he never promises that it will not come at a huge cost and sacrifice on our part. Discipleship does come at a cost. Jesus may call us to leave our family, to leave those we love, to perhaps give up our jobs and to trust that he will take up the burden we bear by making these sacrifices. Jesus promises to give us a different type of free and light living that results in being in relationship with him. He doesn’t call us from our families, friends, professions, and lifestyles and then abandon us but promises to be with us always and to fill our hearts with love for God, love for neighbor, and love for ourselves. May we immerse ourselves in God and spend time with Jesus each day, so that we can go forth and share the love of Jesus with others in very tangible ways. Jesus will provide us with rest to do the task that he has set before us. He will also lighten our load if we but put our faith and trust in him as we obediently heed the call he has placed on each one of us.

Dear God, thank you so very much for sending us Jesus who beckoned us to follow him. He never promised that it would be easy, but he did promise to be with us, to lighten our load, and to give us rest and restoration. Help us to trust that You, God Almighty Lord Jesus Holy Spirit, are with us always as we go forth in your name. Amen.
