Daily Devotion – February 9, 2021
Reading: 1 Timothy 6:6-20
Weekly Theme: The Rewards of Ministry
Today: God’s Pathway to Godly Rewards

We are taught at an early age about working hard for rewards. I remember when my kids were in elementary school they would go up to the board and put different stickers next to their name indicating whether they had been rewarded or on a “bad” day would have to “flip their card”. I do not recall the details but just remember each of my kids tattling on the other because he or she had to flip their card. All of this to say that we are indoctrinated at an early age to expect and hope for material rewards in life.

The apostle Paul gives young Timothy some greater advice about what he needs to do and not do to experience the rewards of being a Christian. In essence, Paul tells Timothy to be content with food and clothing, to not be trapped and tempted by the desire to be rich, to avoid loving money as it is the root of all evil, and that running after money may cause him to wander in his faith. He tells him to run from all of these traps and temptations.

Instead, Paul says to take hold of eternal life with Christ, which is life now and forevermore. We begin to experience eternal life when we confess our need to turn from sin and turn to Jesus, and the live a life in pursuit of righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. When we place our faith and trust in God, we will find that he richly provides everything we need for enjoyment. When we live a life that is rich with goodness, generosity and sharing, instead of greed and selfishness, we are laying up treasures for ourselves eternally and truly living a life full of rewards beyond anything this earth has to offer us.

John Wesley is noted for two phrases that capture the essence of this passage: (1) Make all the money you can so that you can save all the money you can so that you can give all the money you can. He also had three simple rules for the Christian life which in more recent years have been simplified by Bishop Reuben Job as: (1) Do no harm, (2) Do good, and (3) stay in love with God. This way of life will certainly lead us to a life that gives us eternal rewards such as righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. We are rewarded eternally with these blessings when we receive and accept the grace of God made available to us through the life, death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Are you in a relationship with our loving Savior Jesus? If not, want you acknowledge your need for him today, receive God’s gift of grace, and begin to experience the eternal blessings God has in store for you?

Dear God, thank you so much for your gift of grace which moves and woos us into right relationship with You. Help us to know that the rewards you have in store for us are so much greater than any earthly reward we can imagine. Help us to always remember to do no harm, to do good, and to stay in love with you. In the name of your Son, Jesus, we pray. Amen.
