Daily Devotion – February 5, 2021
Exodus 19:3-4
Weekly Theme: God’s Love
Today: Visible Love

The words “I love you” or “love ya” are often said among family and friends but the proof is in the pudding. I am confident that someone loves me by their actions or when they show me love. Otherwise those words have no real meaning.

This week’s focus has been on God’s love for God’s people, yet no where in today’s passage does God tell the “house of Jacob” – God’s people, the Israelites -- that he loves them. God simply tells Moses to tell them , “You have seen what I did to the Egyptians (by sending the plagues to convince them that they needed to release my people) and “how I bore you on eagle’s wings and brought you to myself”. God sent plagues to convince Pharaoh to release Gods’ people from slavery and then delivered them through the Red Sea. As the Egyptians raced into the wall of sea water to chase after God’s people, God made sure his people reached the other side and down came the walls of sea to destroy the Egyptians who had messed with his people.

Today, I challenge each one of us to think about the many things God has done for us. God loves us unconditionally and manifests his love in the ordinariness of our lives. God gives us support and strengthens us through loving relationships with family and friends. God nourishes us physically and spiritually so that we might be filled with the Holy Spirit and go forward to share Jesus’ love with others as Jesus utilizes us to nourish them in the same way we have been nourished. We receive his abundant love and grace through Scripture, through experiences, through sacraments and many others means of grace. Because of all the ways we experience God’s love, we can be sure God is always with us and bears us “on eagle’s wings,” provides our every need and carries us forward as we journey through life. We might not hear God say “I love you” but we see God’s mighty acts of love day in and day out through his forgiving, healing, redeeming, merciful and renewing acts of love. Open your eyes and feel God’s love envelope you today.

Dear God, thank you for showing us your love in tangible ways although we may not hear you say the words “I love you”. Help us to feel your love envelope us today and to share that love with others you place in our lives today! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
