Isaiah 43:1-7
Weekly Theme: God’s Love
Today: You Are Precious

Every time I hear the word precious it reminds me of my stepson, Andrew. Andrew was six when I married his father and on Sundays we would go to church and then go out to eat, always at the same place. There were three elderly people who were always there and one of the ladies would tickle him under the chin and always say, “Just precious...so precious”...and he sure was and still is precious. He was always very mannerly towards this lady and seemed to look forward to this sweet exchange, despite the slight embarrassment.

In today’s passage God calls us precious and offers words of encouragement, yet we still seem to fear. What do you fear and why? I have often said that I do not fear. I am not afraid of  darkness or strangers or awkward situations. I am not afraid of snakes or spiders although I respect them and do not play with them! I do admit to being afraid of mice! They are sneaky and gross! I think my fear comes from bad experiences with mice...years ago one jumped out of box and almost landed on me. The thought still makes me shutter.

The truth of the matter is that I am much more fearful than am willing to admit. I fear rejection, the future, public speaking, embarrassment, failure, illness, and yes, death. I am a Christian and a pastor who is supposed to put my faith and trust in God but as I read today’s passage, I was convicted that perhaps I am not trusting in God to deliver me from these fears when God clearly tells me, “Do not fear as you pass through the waters and when you pass through the fire.”

If you think about it, fire and water are both a blessing and a threat. We obviously need water and fire to survive yet acknowledge that they can both do harm. God promises in this passage to deliver his people and be with them as they go through water and fire and says these wonderful words that give us so much assurance and confidence: “...I have called you...you are precious in my sight, and I love you...do not fear, for I am with you” (Is. 43:1-7).

Today as you reflect on this reading, think about your fears. Imagine God gently looking you in the eye and gently holding your chin and telling you how precious you are. We initially think about our fears as objects that scare us (like mice) instead of intangible feelings that rise within us, hold us back and prevent us from using the gifts God has given us to minister to the needs of others. God is with us always, loves us and wants us to succeed as disciples of Jesus Christ. You are called, you are precious, and you are loved by God. Remember these phrases the next time you fear living your life fully for Christ and carrying out the plans he has for you. God does not want you to fear but wants you to realize how very precious you are in his eyes and to walk with confidence as a child of God.

Dear God, thank you for your promise of deliverance and love spoken through the prophet Isaiah which encourage us to not fear but to know that we are precious to you and loved by you. Help us to therefore, step forward this day to do that which you have in store for us and to further your kingdom as your disciples. In the name of your Son, Jesus, we pray. Amen
