Daily Devotion – February 24, 2021
Luke 12:22-32
Weekly Theme: Protected by God
Today: God’s Provision

At age 23, I entered the professional work force after graduating from college. I worked at an intermediate care facility for persons with developmental delays at a whopping hourly wage of $6.25/hour at a time when the minimum wage was $2.65 ... a total yearly income of $13,000/year. I shared an apartment with my brother, making just enough money to pay my portion of expenses plus my college tuition and books to begin a master’s program at East Carolina University. Although things were tight and even tough at times, I managed to make ends meet by the grace of God. I do not remember worrying a lot about having enough to eat or enough clothes to wear, but I certainly did experience what it means to live paycheck to paycheck.

In today’s passage from Luke, Jesus is teaching his disciples to not worry and to trust in him to give them all they need to subsist.  He informs them that if he feeds the ravens and clothes the lilies of the fields then he definitely is not going to let his disciples go around being hungry and inadequately clothed. From this passage, some Christians have concluded that worrying is a sin. While worrying seems to be a natural response to certain life’s circumstances and situations, it can consume us to the point of keeping us from being fruitful as disciples of Christ. It may not be a sin, but it certainly can distract us from our role as Christians and is a sign that we may not be placing our complete faith and trust in the good Lord. God desires for us to know that he will supply our every need. He did not say that we would be eating lavishly in a banquet hall in a castle or clothing us in the finest linens. But he challenged his disciples and us today to seek God’s kingdom and righteousness first and then all these things (our needs) will be given to us. We just need to believe, trust and leave the rest to God.

Worrying is counter-productive and does not change a single circumstance in our lives. In fact, it can make matters worse by bringing about illnesses resulting from stress and worry. God has promised to provide for us if we but trust him with our needs. We may not get everything we want, but God will supply exactly what we need. I have certainly found this to be so true in my life and in my walk with the Lord. We also need to understand that God’s heavenly treasures are not the things of this earth but are blessings that are intangible such as love, hope, joy, and peace… all blessings that will never wear out. These blessings are not material in nature but satisfy us eternally and made available to us simply by being in the presence of God and experiencing God's goodness. Today instead of worrying about what we do not have let us choose to focus on what we do have. We have a Savior who will supply our every need if we but trust him and find our hope in him instead of the things of this world. Let us commit to fixing our hearts and minds on God and God’s eternal kingdom which exists now and forevermore.

Dear God, thank you for your protection which comes in many forms to include provision. Help us to keep our minds on your kingdom and all the heavenly treasures you have in store for us in this life and forevermore. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
