Pastor: Connie Belmore

Daily Devotion – February 15, 2021
Reading:
Ephesians 6:10-17
Weekly Theme: The Unchanging Truths
Today: The Belt of Truth

When I was a child, my daddy would on rare occasions use “the belt” as a disciplinary tool. He reserved that for the worst offenses and to ensure we understood there were consequences for our actions. First, he taught us his rules… his version of the truth… and made it clear he expected us to stick to those rules. And when we did not, there were consequences. The belt was reserved for those things that really needed to be driven home so that I would never forget the consequences of my wayward actions. It was extremely effective!! My dad was not a mean man and I now understand that he just wanted to teach me right from wrong.

Today’s passage from Ephesians 6 teaches us about the importance of putting on the armor of God every day. Just prior to today’s passage, Paul is teaching the Ephesians that there is a spiritual warfare that takes place constantly in the spiritual realm. There are competing forces battling for our very souls as Christians. We need to be able to fight off the evil forces by putting on the armor of God to defend and protect ourselves against those forces. The very first wardrobe item is the belt of truth. A belt in the days of Paul was worn around the waist (the loins) as it is today but was not an accessory nor was it used to hold the pants up. In those days, when men and women wore robes, the belt was used to gather up (gird) loose clothing so that it would not get in the way as they worked or carried out duties in battle. The belt was to keep them from “tripping up” and stumbling as they went about their daily routine.

In our lives as Christians, we need to put on the belt of Truth who is Jesus Christ. Jesus says in John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. Jesus came to earth so that we might gain access to God the Father. And if we want to see the nature, the very truth, about God so that we can live a godly life and resist all the evil that is waiting to lure us in the spiritual realm, then we need to gird up with the truth each day so that we will see and be the truth as exemplified by Jesus Christ in his life on earth as he taught us how to live a godly life.

Today we hear about truth all the time on the news and about how people seek the truth. Sadly, differing worldviews all claim to embrace “truth” and one person’s truth may conflict with another’s. This makes truth from the human perspective “all relative”. However, for Christians, there is one Truth and that is Jesus Christ. Each day we should put on Christ as the first piece of the godly armor so that we can resist evil and go forth in love and peace. As you begin this week, each day make sure you gird up with the belt of Truth in Jesus Christ through prayer, Bible study, daily worship and serving others.

Dear God, thank you for the Truth you sent us in Jesus Christ. Thank you for the example he has set for us and help us to begin each day by putting on the belt of Truth, so that others will see Christ in us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
