Reading:
2 Timothy 1:8-14
Weekly Theme: The Rewards of Ministry
Today: Only Jesus

When I was a young adult, my parents sent me to college to obtain my bachelor’s degree. I worked at a retirement assisted living facility in Chapel Hill for a short season until I obtained a full time job at an intermediate care facility for developmentally delay. This job did not pay particularly well but was enough for me to live on my own, pay my bills, and begin a master’s degree program in Public Administration. My goal was to be able to support myself, become independent, and make enough money to have a few “extras” in life. After obtaining my Masters degree, I joined the Air Force and began my career as a public servant. While one will never get rich working for the government, it is possible to reach a level of financial security and the benefits are still decent. Within a couple of years, I met my husband, and we were married and together began to save our money. We were living a decent life and making decent money but living in the Washington DC area where housing costs were astronomical and mortgage interest rates were 10%. But somehow we managed and eventually moved to North Carolina where we could save more of our income and we have been fortunate and blessed on many ways. But there has been no greater reward in my life than being in a relationship with Jesus.

All those years of my working hard for the government and reaching my career goals and my husband working hard as a nurse anesthetist may have paid off financially, but they did not bring us true happiness. Our relationship with Jesus Christ alone has been the key to being able to live a life of joy even amidst the trials and tribulations we have both faced through sickness and the death of our dear loved ones. Admittedly, we spent the first half of our marriage making money, raising our three children, and trying to achieve success within our respective career. But soon we realized as we lost three of our parents within 4 years, that Jesus was the only One who could sustain us in all ways. As we now reflect on our life together, we realize that our greatest reward comes from our relationship with Jesus, not from our career paths or even our marriage. Over the years, we realize more and more that our joy together in life came and comes from Jesus.

In today’s passage, Paul in his second letter to Timothy reminds us that being with Jesus Christ is our reward. When we rely on Jesus and the power of God, we are saved, called, and given purpose that goes beyond ourselves but is a holy calling with holy purpose and grace given to us by Jesus Christ and him alone. He has abolished death, brought life, entrusted us, and given us faith and love. In return, we are now inspired to share and proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ with others, knowing that Jesus will supply all our needs and sustain us in this life and forever more. The reward of this life is Christ alone...all day long, Christ alone. Give me Jesus!

Dear God, thank you for giving us the greatest gift of all, Jesus. Help us to understand that nothing or no one can give us peace and joy and hope in this life except Jesus Christ. He alone is our rock and salvation, and it is in his name we now pray. Amen.
