Daily Devotion - December 22, 2020 - Adoption

Pastor: Connie Belmore

Daily Devotion – December 22, 2020
Reading: Galatians 3:23-4:7
Weekly Theme: All Things New
Today: Adoption

I have several friends and a relative who have children through the process of adoption. We know what adoption means but may not know how to articulate the definition. It is a process whereby a person assumes the parenting of another, usually a child, from that person's biological or legal parent or parents. Legal adoptions permanently transfer all rights and responsibilities from the biological parent or parents. The parents of an adopted child form a loving bond with their child just as a birth parent forms a bond and provides the child with a new life and better life than they might have experienced otherwise.

In Galatians 3:23-4:7, Paul compares the result of being redeemed (freed from our debt caused by sin) to being adopted into God’s family. This adoption results in being made heirs with Christ, and thus, becoming Abraham’s seeds (God’s people). Until we acknowledge the grace of God and enter into a relationship with Christ, we are enslaved by the things of this world. Until God’s Son, Jesus Christ, redeemed us, people were bound to the law. But when Jesus came and God sent his Spirit into our hearts, we became heirs with Christ because of what God did through Christ... through his death and resurrection. Jesus was born of a woman, and under the law, became flesh, perfectly obeyed and fulfilled the law, died for our sins and was raised to a new life. Because of what God has done through Christ, we are able to receive God’s gift of grace and therefore, die to our sins and be raised to new life. Because of Christ, we can be adopted as God’s children, no longer enslaved by law and sin, and heirs with Christ. We have a new life, a new family and a new teacher and guide through God’s Holy Spirit.

In this same passage, we are reminded that we are equalized as God’s heirs. God does not differentiate between Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female, because we are all made one in Christ. God does not discriminate but extends God’s grace to all people and desires that all become heirs to the kingdom. No one is superior to anyone else before God. We are all invited to share equally in our relationship with God, through Jesus Christ. During this holiday season and beyond, let us celebrate our adoption by God and thank God for sending Jesus so that we might be redeemed and freed from the bondage of sin and shame. If you have yet to receive the wonderful gift of God’s grace and the freedom God desires for each of us, and would like to talk with someone, please email eurekaumc@yahoo.com or call 919-242-2229. For those who are already adopted children of God, let us share the good news of our redemption through our words and deeds so that others may also know God as “Abba, Father”.

Dear God, thank you for sending your Son, Jesus Christ, so that we might all be adopted by you. Help us to understand the freedom You offer to us through this adoption and be inspired by your Spirit to invite others to become part of Your family. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
