Today’s Devotion – December 15, 2020
Matthew 1:18-25
Weekly Theme: God Is with Us
Today: Joseph

“God is with us.” For the Christian who has placed their faith in God, right this minute, God is here! The past few weeks we have focused on this expression which also defines who Jesus is... the physical representation of God being with those he interacted with on earth and the spiritual representation left with us by Jesus when he left us the Holy Spirit, who interacts with us today. And today, we can find comfort in knowing that Jesus is seated next to the God, the Father, interceding on our behalf because he knows the challenges we face as he faced them too in his life on earth. Yes, God is with us and we each have experiences that testify to the presence of God in our lives.

Today's reading is the story of how God was with Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus. Can you imagine being told that your fiancé is pregnant, and you have never even “been with” her? What would you do? How would you react? Joseph is described as “faithful to the law” and initially intended to divorce Mary quietly; he did not want to publicly disgrace her. Joseph’s plan sounds very respectful and gentlemanly. However, God had another plan and sent an angel to Joseph in a dream who enlightened him about the way Mary became pregnant through the Holy Spirit and encouraged Joseph to not be afraid to marry her. The angel also told Joseph to give the child the name Jesus, which means “to rescue or save” because that is exactly what Jesus is going to do. The next verse explains that this crazy, unfathomable explanation Joseph is finding out about from an angel in a dream is to fulfill prophesy spoken through Isaiah to King Ahaz saying, “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel (which means “God with us”)”. Joseph obeys.

Wow! Can you imagine being told all of this and then responding in such an obedient and faithful way as Joseph? I am sure that he and Mary were both the talk of the town because of his decision to proceed with their marriage and to abstain from consummating the marriage until after the birth of Jesus. I am sure Joseph must have known this decision was going to result in a life that would not be easy for him and Mary. Why, then, did Joseph respond in this way? Joseph was faithful because God was faithful. God was with Joseph when the angel was sent by God to explain everything. In verse 24, Joseph wakes up and does what the Lord has encouraged him to do and took Mary home to be his wife. And when the Savior was born, he gave him the name Jesus and he knew that he was also going to be called Immanuel, “God with us”. Joseph knew that God would deliver him, that God would be with him and that his obedience to God would result in something bigger than himself. Oh, that we would be more like Joseph: faithful in embracing life knowing that God will deliver us and is always with us!

As we continue through the remaining days of Advent, have faith and confidence that God is always with you, in this very moment, to deliver you through all that you face during this time! Amen!

Dear God, thank you that you are always with us to deliver us through the many challenges of this life. Help us to have faith in you and to thus, live according to Your will with confidence. We pray this In the name of Jesus, Your Son and Your very presence with us who rescues and delivers us. Amen.
