Pastor: Connie Belmore

Daily Devotion – April 6, 2021
2 Corinthians 4
Weekly Theme: Partakers of Eternal Life
Today: Renewed Day by Day

Have you ever been stuck in a rut… a day-to-day routine that becomes mundane and meaningless? What causes these periods in our lives when we go through the meaningless motions each day? As Christians, we may sometimes find ourselves experiencing a spiritual hiatus. In our human condition, we allow ourselves to lose heart and become trapped in a pattern of living that affects us spiritually. The apostle Paul shares encouraging words with the Corinthians to inspire them, and us, during these spiritually dry times.

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed”. When we lose heart, Paul encourages us to remember that as Christians we carry around both the death and life of Jesus. In other words, we are, day by day, reminded that Jesus died for our sins, but the story did not end there. Jesus was raised to new life so that we might be able to die to our sins each day and be raised to new life. We are always “given over” to Jesus’ death so that his life might be revealed through us for this primary purpose: to share the grace of God through Jesus with more and more people and glorify God. As Christians, this is our purpose for living each day!

Through the Holy Spirit, we are renewed day by day so that we do not lose heart as we proclaim the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We avoid spiritual hiatus only by fixing our eyes on what is unseen rather than what is seen, remembering that all we see right now is temporary and will lead to an empty, meaningless life. But what is unseen is eternal. Are you and I setting our eyes on what is unseen and doing our part to share the grace poured out through Jesus with others?

Dear God, thank you so much for allowing your light to shine in our lives so we might see this world has no permanence. Help us to fix our eyes on that which we cannot see, the eternal, and carry with us each day the death and life of Jesus, dying to our sins and being raised new life so that we might share through word and deed Your abundant grace through Jesus Christ and that You might be glorified. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
