The Rich Blessings of God

We often use the words “blessed” and “blessings” to describe a state or desired state of being. I frequently use the expression at the end of emails and have used it for years. It was the frequent closing of an email of a good friend of mine and when I received emails from him, it would make me take a pause and reflect on the blessings in my life and be thankful. I still use this expression today at the end of my emails.

Often the blessings I lift in praise to God involve family, friends and physical comfort or healing in my life and the lives of others. Today’s reading reminds us of God’s rich blessings that are poured out on us… true, spiritual blessings that we may often overlook as we praise God. These blessings include our very adoption by God as children on whom he lavishes glorious grace (vv. 5-6). We also are blessed spiritually through redemption, the very forgiveness of our sins and with this comes spiritual insight through wisdom and understanding (vv. 7-10). God also has predestined (chosen) those who receive this blessing of grace to reflect his holy character in a world that is full of sin (vv. 11-12). The most important blessing God has given us is the seal of the Holy Spirit who convicts, inspires and spurs us on to a life of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23), eternally, now and forevermore.

As we pray, we certainly should always give thanks for the individual blessings of family, friends and circumstances in our life. But we should also remember the rich spiritual blessings bestowed on us by God the moment we received God’s gift of grace and that still exists within each of us as adopted children of God, through the gift of the Holy Spirit. In this day of tension and stress in our world, we need to be ever mindful and grateful for these gifts and lean into the Holy Spirit to guide us in Christian love as we respond to all that is going on around us.

Dear God, thank you for the richness of all of the spiritual gifts you have bestowed on us and that have been sealed by your Holy Spirit. Thank you for forgiving and redeeming us and giving us the insight and wisdom to understand and respond to all circumstances you place in our lives. Help us to be ever mindful and grateful of your presence with us and to live a life that is full of the fruit of your Spirit. We ask this knowing that you are Father, Son and Holy Spirit…Amen.
