Same Difference

At some point as an older teenager, I became familiar with the expression “same difference”. As is often the case when a person learns a new expression, I used it far too frequently and usually with an attitude of indifference; it drove my mom crazy. In her mind, the expression made absolutely no sense. In the context I used the expression, I would have to say now, many years later, that she was correct.

In today’s reading we see clearly that there is one context in which these two words --- same and different -- is a perfect description… the Church! These two words are each used four times in these eleven verses.  The passage clearly states that as Christians we are all the same when it comes to the Spirit in us, the Lord we worship, the God who created and gifted us and the Spirit who distributes spiritual gifts to us. It is in the Church that we come together to worship with one voice all that God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

It is also in the church that we express our worship through the use of different gifts to support different ministries that take place in the Church --- the body of Christ. In this short passage from 1 Corinthians 11, it refers to wisdom, faith, miracles, prophesy, distinguishing spirits, different kinds of tongues and the ability to interpret tongues. These different gifts are from One Spirit to be used to know and grow in the love of God and show that love to others.

Church is a “both/and” word in that it is indeed the body of Christ, one church universal AND is made of many parts and many types of churches (denominations) and many types of people with many different gifts offered up to serve, love and worship the same One God in three persons. The next time you refer to the Church just remember the words “same difference”… one living, breathing organism to carry out the same mission of Jesus Christ using our different gifts and expressions of faith to share the good news of Jesus Christ. Let's embrace our differences and use them for God's glory!

Dear God, we thank you for the gift of the Church, the body of Christ. Help us to not confine church to a building or a denomination or to anything other than what she was created by you to be --- One body of Christ, a living organism with many different gifts whose mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
