Remember This

This weekend is Father’s Day and although I think of my Dad every day, I think of him in a special way this weekend. He died when he was 65 after a two-year battle with cancer. He had about one year of remission and within that period it seemed to me that he wanted to pass along valuable lessons he had learned in life. I remember one time when he said, “The Lord has been good to me. No matter what you do, make sure you give back to God a portion of that which belongs to him and you will be blessed”. I do not think my Dad meant to imply “prosperity gospel”, “if-then” conditional mentality. What I believe he was trying to convey, is that generous giving is evidence of being in a faithful, trusting and committed relationship with Jesus Christ.

In today’s Scripture reading, Paul is giving us this same message. Paul says, “Remember this” and then passes on a message encouraging the people of Corinth to give to God, “without reluctance or compulsion, but with cheer…”. God desires that we give out of our love for God and out of our gratitude for God’s goodness. In fact, we are enriched so that we can be generous in helping others and subsequently bear witness to and give thanks for God’s goodness. The reason we give is to show our trust in God to supply our needs and to accompany giving with a confession of the gospel of Jesus Christ and our faith in God to provide our needs.

For the father’s reading this, I encourage you to do some self-examination about how you are modeling giving of your tithe, time and talents to the Lord. How are you giving back to the Lord, a portion of the blessings that have received from the Lord? The day my Dad challenged me, along with a couple of stewardship campaigns and sermons were all pivotal in moving me towards becoming a tither. I am thankful for a Dad who was willing to say “remember this…” and share this pearl of wisdom and many others during his time on earth.

Dear God, we give you thanks for all fathers who have raised their children to trust in you to provide for their families and have given generously of their tithe, time, and talent, modelling their complete trust in you. Be with fathers who have not been able to do this due to a variety of circumstances and those who may not know you Son, Jesus, as their Lord and Savior. Bless all fathers today and give them your wisdom as they model godly behavior to their children. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
