God’s Preservation Plan

Right this moment, as I type these words, the news is full of one bad news story after another. We are now not only dealing with COVID-19, but we are also dealing with civil unrest like we have not seen in 50 years due to the unjust murder of George Floyd. Where do we turn during these trying times? Well, as Christians we know that we should turn to the Lord, but so often we turn to unhealthy practices for our own preservation instead of following God’s preservation plan. Instead of turning to self-destructive behavior as individuals and as a nation, God offers a plan in Deuteronomy 6 for the purpose of preserving us now and in generations to come.

God's preservation plan begins with God's people loving God, with heart, soul and strength and  putting God's Word in our hearts. We then teach our children and our households about loving God and about God'scommandments which are all about our relationship with God and our relationship with one another (vv. 4-9). We are also to fear and serve God because the might and power of God are not for the purposes of keeping us away from God but to make us aware of his might and power which are always used to bring about righteousness and justice. We should not test the Lord or try to bargain with God, but rather to do what is good and right and trust God. Not only do we love God, teach our families about God, fear and serve God, but we also observe all of his laws and statutes… which in the New Testament (Matthew 22:37-40) are summed up by Jesus as the Great Commandment which is love God and love others. The key to preservation plan in Deuteronomy 6 and Matthew 22 is love.

God’s preservation plan is the key to seeing our way through the terrible mess we find ourselves in today. We must look for ways to unite with one another and share the love of Christ instead of criticizing. Our church’s mission is to know the love of God, grow in that love each and every day and then show that love to a broken world. We all know this plan… we just some times have trouble living it. Let’s all commit to living God’s preservation plan today!! God is and should be our only hope for preserving ourselves and others as right and good people, and his plan starts and ends with love!

Dear God, we thank you for your Word, which gives us your preservation plan to see us through these difficult times.  Help us to start applying your plan to our life, beginning with loving you and loving others.  Help us to teach others to do the same and to show that love to a world that is so lost!  We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.
