Signed, Sealed and Delivered

This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday, a day when we celebrate the descending of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles resulting in the birth of the Church. The word literally means fifty or fiftieth, representing 50 days after Easter. In yesterday’s devotion, we learned that is not by might or power that the Lord has promised us that we will be able to accomplish God’s mission, but it is through God’s Spirit. Today we reflect on the awesome reality that we have been signed, sealed and delivered by the Holy Spirit!

In Ephesians 1:13-14, Paul explains that when we believe we are marked (signed) with a seal. The Holy Spirit is God’s signature and seal indicating that God will keep his promises. God has placed his down payment on us, marked us as his children and will deliver us through the trials we face in this life. What great assurance it is to know that God’s mark is upon us, residing in us, and delivering us through the trials of this life! The presence of the Holy Spirit demonstrates that we are sincere in our faith, proves we are God’s children, and assures us of eternal life. In other words, we are marked by God and it shows because the Holy Spirit is in us!

Later in his letter to the Ephesians (4:29-5:2), Paul advises us to not grieve (or sadden) the Holy Spirit. Paul explains that when we speak unwholesome talk and are bitter, enraged, angry, fighting and insulting one another as Christians, this saddens the Holy Spirit. When we forget that we have been signed, sealed and delivered, and do not show compassion to one another as Christians, this breaks the very heart of God. But praise be to God for giving us the Holy Spirit so that we can be delivered from this behavior to live like God’s example, Jesus, who was kind, compassionate, forgiving, loving to the point of sacrificing his life for us!  Today when we feel tempted to unwholesome talk and behavior, let us remember that this behavior saddens the Holy Spirit who has provided us with all we need to please God and live a wholesome life together, loving one another so that others may see that we belong to Christ.

Dear God, Thank you that you have signed, sealed and delivered us through your Son, Jesus Christ, and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Help us to live wholesome lives that reflect your love so that others may come to know you as well. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
