Age Is No Excuse
Some Suggested Scripture Readings: Genesis
21 -24; 37:4; Psalms 71:9,18; 92:14; Isaiah 46:4; Zechariah 8:4; Joel 2:28; Acts 2:17

For 23 years I worked in health care administration within the military health care system serving in health care administration within health care operations, as an active duty member, federal employee and reservist. For at least half of that time period, I felt and knew that the Lord was calling me to do something in ministry and to do it full time. However, I came up with all kinds of reasons for not doing it and postponed responding to God’s call for at least 12-13 years. By the time I began to listen, I was already 40 years old and by the time I finally responded and entered ministry on a full time basis, I was 49 years old. The older I was, the more I used age as an excuse. I would say to myself and others, “I am too old to quit doing what I am doing and switch to something new.” or “surely, God is not calling me to work in youth ministry, full time at 49 years old.” Finally, the call became so strong that I responded and left my comfort zone to enter into full time ministry as the youth director at my church. My only regret is that I had heeded that call earlier; I can testify that age is no excuse for not responding to God’s call on your life.

Look at all the examples in the Bible, that are in the suggested readings for today. In Genesis 21-24, God calls Abraham to be the father of all nations and he responds (although with a little resistance) at the ripe old age of 99. His wife, Sarah, who was no spring chicken, gave birth to and nursed a child well into her 80s or 90s. Conversely, Mary, the mother of Jesus, as a teenager, does not think she is too young to be used to carry out God’s will (Luke 1:26-38). Jacob fathered a son, Joseph, who eventually became second in command in Egypt (Genesis 37:3). Yes, the Bible tells us in these stories and many others that there is no demographic factor, to include age, that can be used as an excuse for not obeying when God calls us.

In both Joel 2:28 and in Acts 2:27, we are told that in the last days (and that may be right now since we know not the day or hour), we are to understand that the Holy Spirit is poured out on all people, male and female and old and young. There are many other references throughout the Bible that encourage us to realize God is calling us all to be part of the priesthood of believers who are to share the good news of what God has done, what God is doing and what God promises to do in the future. So let’s not let our demographics be an excuse for not responding to God’s call. Pray and ask God to reveal his will for you and your life and then respond… no excuses!

Dear God, thank you for giving us life abundantly to include the gifts you have given us to use for your glory. Help us to be open to your will and to not come up with all kinds of excuses to not respond to what you have in store for us. Help us to look at the examples in your Word and respond, as they did, to the ministries and tasks that you have in store for us to do to further your kingdom. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
