Team Effort
Reading: Isaiah 45:1-8

For many summers as a youth volunteer and youth director, I had the privilege of working with an organization called Team Effort. They organized and staffed mission camps all over the world and our youth ministry was able to go to many places at a reasonable rate and experience what it was like to serve with each other as we helped meet the needs of others. Team Effort would have several churches in one camp doing several projects all at one time. They were able to carry out this function with three people per team: the Director (who was involved in all projects); and two staff members who led each church team. This approach was amazingly effective at carrying out God’s Great Commandment and Great Commission to love God, love others and go forth to make disciples, all for God’s glory.

Today’s Scripture reading is about another one of God’s teams whose function was ultimately the same as that of the staff who led us on these mission trips; the function of God’s team is always to love and glorify God. God implored two others to join God in carrying out God’s mission which was to ensure “all know from the rising of the sun to its setting, that there is no God but (God)” and that God is the one and only Lord who brings both creation and disaster and who formed light and dark. The person God is speaking to in this passage was a king named Cyrus who did not even know God and who worshipped idols. The other person God used was the prophet, Isaiah, who is narrating this passage and relating this information to the people of God so they will know how God plans to utilize Cyrus. God enlists the assistance of Isaiah and King Cyrus to inform the people of Israel that righteousness and salvation will prevail. God even utilized an ungodly King to help accomplish his mission and be a part of the team to bring about righteousness and salvation.

If God can use the ungodly, I am certain God can use those of us who do believe. Have you opened yourself up to be part of a team of people who are engaged in active ministry with one single goal in mind? Our goal is to go forth and make disciples for the glory of God. We do this by teaching and baptizing in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, remembering God is with us always, just as God was with Isaiah and Cyrus. Making disciples is God’s plan of how to bring about righteousness and salvation. There is one huge difference; since the days of Isaiah, God sent us Jesus to show us how to carry out God’s mission and to define for us God’s kingdom. He sent Jesus to save us and to redeem us. And God gave Jesus all authority and right now, Jesus sits next to God and intercedes on our behalf. Let’s actively engage and participate in this great team effort to spread the good news of the righteousness and salvation that God has in store for all of us.

Dear God, thank you for placing people in our lives whose hands we can grasp to carry out your perfect will on earth. Help us to seek and understand your will which is to further your king by spreading the good news of your desire for our righteousness and salvation. Help us to join together in team effort to bring about your will with the ultimate goal of glorifying your name. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
