Daily Devotion – January 26, 2021
Reading: John 15:1-11
Weekly Theme: The Authority of God’s Word
Today: Remain in Me

In my mother’s backyard is a grapevine. It is not a huge vine and since her death in 2016 we have not done very much to keep it trimmed and pruned. Last summer, I didn’t notice if there were any grapes, but I expect if we pruned it and cleaned out the weeds and the branches that are dried and brittle, the remaining branches would thrive. In today’s passage, Jesus uses a vine to describe his relationship with God and his relationship with us.

Jesus says, I am the vine, and the Father is the gardener. If a branch that is in the vine, Jesus, does not produce fruit, God, the gardener, will remove it so that those vines that remain will produce fruit. Jesus says if you remain in me, I will remain in you. What does this really mean... to remain in Jesus? Jesus exemplifies for us by remaining in God through obedience and love. Jesus came to earth to show us the will of God. As God prunes and removes the old vines that are not producing, the vines that remain are lifted up so that they might be fruitful. God also wants to lift you and me up and inspire us through the power of the Holy Spirit. The key ingredient to remain in Jesus is love. When we have an intimate relationship with the Source of life and love, we will grow and flourish and be fruitful.

Conversely if we disconnect from the vine... from the very source of life... we will begin to shrivel and shrink and will not bear fruit. This is a clear indication that we need to repent and turn away from that which is causing us to wither and then draw near to and remain in Jesus. The more familiar we are with God’s Word, the more we meditate on it and the more it becomes a part of who we are, the more obedient we will become. It is through our remaining in Jesus that we grow into a deeper and deeper relationship with him. The outcome of being in a loving, stable relationship with Jesus results in nothing less that pure joy. Do you know why? Because God, the gardener, is in control and Jesus, the vine, remains in God, and we remain in Jesus and experience, joy, love and a spiritually fruitful life. God’s authority is used to prune us and re-vector us so that we might be lifted up and encouraged to live a spiritually fruitful life. Apart from Jesus, we can do nothing, but with Jesus we will be moved to a fruitful life of love and joy. Praise be to God! Amen!

Dear God, thank you for the Vine, your Son, Jesus. Help us to remain in him and to enjoy the stability and love and peace that You desire for us so that we might share with others the good news of Jesus, and of Your abundant grace and love. In Jesus’s name we praise! Amen.
